
The University of Texas at Tyler offers online Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification, known as the STEP program, to help students complete the requirements to teach in a Texas classroom. Before students can teach in Texas, they must fulfill 3 requirements.
- Hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
- Complete an accredited certification program such as STEP.
- Pass required state of Texas certification exams.
In as little as one year, students can complete this online program to fulfill step 2 of the requirements to teach in Texas.

All-level (early childhood – grade 12), available in specific content areas
- Receive training that equips you to teach specific subjects:
Grades 4-8 level specializations are available in English language arts and reading, social studies, math and science.
Grades 7-12 level specializations are available in any traditional subjects such as biology, math, English, chemistry, etc.
EC-12 level specializations include art, non-English languages, (LOTE-Spanish), music, health education, theater and physical education.
- Complete a student teaching experience or an internship overseen by your UT Tyler supervisor and a mentor in your sponsoring school.
- Earn 9-12 credit hours toward a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction.

Assessment in Educational Settings – Explore the analysis and application of elements of pre- and post-assessment in educational settings, including learning products and processes, learning environments, and instructional decisions.
Content Literacy in the Secondary School – Undertake a study of the assessment of textbooks, content area reading-study skills, teacher/learner strategies via content reading lessons, assessment procedures, and the development of secondary reading programs.
Graduate Methods: Models of Teaching –Study methodology for secondary teaching disciplines, curriculum, materials and instructional models.
