Public education in the state is anchored by the University of South Carolina System, a state university system of eight campuses that is comprised of its flagship campus in Columbia, as well as three senior campuses and four regional campuses. University of South Carolina


The University of South Carolina was founded in 1801 and is the flagship institution of the University of South Carolina System, offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Winthrop University

Rock Hill

Winthrop University is a liberal arts institution founded in 1886. It originally operated as a teachers’ college for young women, but today offers undergraduate and graduate degrees through five colleges and schools to both men and women. U.S. News & World Report ranks the school among the best in the South.

South Carolina State University


Founded in 1896, South Carolina State University is the state’s only public, historically black college and university, or HBCU. It awards the only Bachelor of Science program in nuclear engineering in South Carolina and at an HBCU.

Anderson University


Founded in 1911, Anderson University is a private, liberal arts university that is affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention. It is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 20 colleges in the South.

Benedict College

Benedict College is a historically black, liberal arts college. It was founded in 1870 by northern Baptists as a teachers’ college, but has since expanded into a four-year college offering degrees in nearly 30 major areas of study.
